Flashpoint is an 2018 superhero film based on the comic of the same name. A sequel to The Flash, It is the 10th film in DC Extended Universe and the final installment of the Golden Age.

A sequel, The Flash: Beyond the Speed Force, was released in 2025.

As the final film of the Golden Age, the film incorporates a bit of everything from the previous films, particularly with the addition of Task Force X and the Titans as resistance, as well as the Black Zero Event being the final destroyer of the Flashpoint timeline. The film introduces Impulse, Plastique, and Silver Banshee into the DCEU.

Synopsis[]

After the Amazon-Atlantean war reemerged, Flash attempts to correct it by going back in time, creating a catastrophic reality of a war-torn world between the Amazons and the Atlanteans.

While waiting in line to order his breakfast, Barry Allen is alerted by Superman of Justice League emergency, Barry then dons his new Flash suit and runs to the crime scene, where a hospital is collapsing. He sees a flash of red lightning running around and discovers that it's another speedster, donning a similar costume, he chases him across the world[1], before eventually capturing him and breaking his legs, and he was sent to Belle Reve by A.R.G.U.S..

Going back to the cafe, he runs into his girlfriend, Iris, who gives him the food he planned to order. They then go to work. At the deep level of S.T.A.R. Labs, the cosmic treadmill is being tested. Later on, Barry and Iris plans a date, with Iris suggesting that they go to the beach, seeing that it's far away, Iris tells him that he could just use his powers and that she knows due to his sleeptalking. He then takes her and runs toward the East Coast, after having some fun, a tsunami alert goes off and he returns Iris to Central City. When the run up hits, Flash does his best to remove people from the ground to the upper floors of large buildings. He then faces the main perpetrator Aquaman, who shows him the decapitated head of Wonder Woman.

"It's Aquaman. He did this."
"You saw him?"
"I don't know what's wrong with him but from what I've seen, he's beyond saving.

Fearing that whatever is wrong is beyond salvation, Flash runs back to Central City, which is revealed to suffer the same tsunami from the Great Lakes, searching for Iris, he discovers her dead floating body. After the flood subsided, feeling that he could've saved her, Barry tells the Justice League[2] that he plans on going back in time to fix everything. Warned by his teammates of unintended consequences, he does it anyway.

"Bruce! Why did you say that name?! Why did you say my dead son's name!"
"Dead son? Oh my God. Bruce died that night didn't he? He died and you lived. You're Thomas Wayne.

Batman and Barry

At the labs, he activates the treadmill and goes back in time. Barry wakes up at his station all dizzy, with the memories of his original timeline clashing with the current one, he then cries remembering his mom, who is alive in this timeline. He sees that in this timeline, the Second Amazon-Atlantean War continued on, resulting in most of Europe and North Africa to be submerged. Outside, he meets Iris, with her husband and daughter. Barry then tries to run but discovers that he no longer has his powers.

In Gotham, Batman fights the Mutants before he is greeted by Cyborg. Cyborg tries to persuade him to join the resistance, consisting of Nightwing, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Terra. At the shores of the UK, the Task Force X is deployed to kill any Atlantean that emerges.

Barry goes home to his mom, and chats with her, revealing that he's the Flash, he then discovers that his powers are gone. He decides to travel to Gotham and meet Batman. At the decrepit Wayne Manor, he trespasses and goes to the basement, where he is met with punches from Batman. After a brief fight, he deduces that this Batman is Thomas, and Bruce is dead. The two chat, Barry explains his ordeal and that he needs to get his powers back, and they do so atop the Wayne Manor, which didn't work.

Back at the UK, reporter Lois Lane is saved by the resistance during an Amazon attack, and the Task Force X is overwhelmed by the Atlantean army, who began to emerge to fight the Amazons, resulting in a chaotic battle between the four factions.

Barry and Batman attempt again, explaining that the lightning that struck him was no ordinary one, and that a second strike would be sufficient, which worked. Barry then creates a suit made out of Thomas' other suits. He quickly tries to go back to his timeline but unsuccessful as someone else is using the Speed Force. After telling Batman about his world and about Bruce, Batman is then determined to end the war and help Barry back to his world. Barry tells him that they would need somebody called Superman. After searching, they found out that Clark Kent doesn't exist, and after some more searching, Batman contacts Cyborg.

At the battlefield, Wonder Woman arrive and began to kill off the resistance and Task Force X, before fighting Aquaman.

Cyborg, Batman, and Flash infiltrate Area 51, Flash phase through the different sectors to find Superman and discovers the experimented remains of Martian Manhunter, they finally find Subject-1, and after fighting off the security forces, the subject is exposed to sunlight, empowering him, helping the team escape the facility. Cyborg receives a backup request from Nightwing as Wonder Woman have slaughtered most of the resistance. Cyborg then insists that they go to the war. Back on Area 51, scientist Hal Jordan is escorted to examine the glowing ring found alongside an alien. The ring then flies into his finger, making him a Green Lantern.

"How did this all happen?"

Batman, Flash, Cyborg, and Subject-1 arrive in London, where Barry meets Professor Zoom once again, the two chase-fight once again. In outer space, the General Zod and the Sword of Rao arrive on Earth, where Zod lures Kal-El, and tricks him into safety, just to extract the Growth Codex from his body. Zod then activates the world engine, terraforming Earth. the Green Lantern ring notifies Hal of this, and he chooses to sacrifice himself by hurling into the engine, failing however. After most of the Amazons and Atlanteans were killed by Zod's soldiers, Wonder Woman finally kills Aquaman before she gets executed by Faora. Afar, Zoom taunts Flash for the chaos he built, explaining that his selfish goal caused this world to exist, before he is stabbed by Batman, killing him. Batman then gives Flash a letter for Bruce, saying that the only way to save this world is to erase it.

Flash then travels back home, where he says his final goodbye to his mom. Traveling back in time, he returns to his original timeline, to find that somethings have changed, for the better. He gives the letter to Bruce and meets new people, like Impulse. Reuniting with Iris, he takes her to Rome for a date.

In the post-credits scene, Lex Luthor meets with Deathstroke, suggesting an alliance.

It was announced in 2015 that the final film of Phase I and the sequel to The Flash would be based on the Flashpoint storyline. Matthew Vaughn was slated to return to direct. Most of the cast from Justice League I was confirmed to reprise their roles as their alternate universe counterparts.

Jared Leto was cast as Eobard Thawne/Professor Zoom in early 2016. Filming began later that year.

Trivia[]

  • General Zod being in the film is entirely kept secret.
  • Because Shazam hadn't appeared yet at this point in the DCEU, Captain Thunder was excluded.
  • The Resistance in this film is just the alternate counterparts of the Titans.
  • Power Girl was considered to be in the film.
