Katar Hol, better known throughout history as Hawkman, was an alien from the planet Thanagar and an archaeologist who had been reincarnated since the times of Ancient Egypt. He and his wife Shayera Hol helped humanity progress with their Thanagarian technology and became worshipped and was chosen as rulers of the Egyptian Dynasty. During his reign as Prince Khufu, he hunted down a fugitive named Hath-Set, coming across Black Adam in the process. He and Chay-Ara was killed by Hath-Set and was cursed to reincarnate forever.
In World War II, he was a reincarnated as a detective named James Wright, and he joined the Justice Society of America to fight against the enemy powers and to find his long lost wife.
In the modern world, he was reincarnated as Carter Hall, and continued his life of heroism with the JSA.

- Superhuman strength: Thanagarians possess strength much more powerful than humans.
- Reincarnation: The Nth metal knife which Vandal Savage used to kill Hawkman in his time as Prince Khufu had an unusual effect upon his soul and that of his lover Chay-Ara (Shayera). The pair are locked in a seemingly endless cycle of death and rebirth throughout the centuries. While not a superhuman power per se, this propensity for reincarnation has allowed Hawkman to cheat death and return to active duty in his current incarnation.
- Flight: Using his Nth metal wings, Hawkman is able to pierce through the skies.
